(I've been dubbing all my life) Sound and photography installation, variable measures, 2007
Project Llevo toda mi vida doblando
Professional dubbing’s principal function is to facilitate the translation and comprehension of a film or a TV program. However, the translation of a language to another and the problems related to lip sync, make the interpretation intricate and fragile. Sometimes, these factors make possible another representation of the original, another fiction. Dubbing is converted into meta language, since the actor interprets someone that interprets, creating layers of meaning, and between these layers, moments or gaps, where the story loses its original meaning. A possibility of the Double emerges.
The installation explores notions of language and identity through interviews with dubbing actors in the Basque Country (North of Spain) who speak about their -quite often contradictory - experiences of working with dubbing. The photographs of details in the dubbing studios refuse to reveal much about these actors that work in anonymity, only recognised by the sound of their voices.
